The panel's leaders described the need for a capability similar to the Navy research program, but declined to pick "winners and losers," its chairwoman said.
Pending legislation in the Senate aims to force the Navy and Marine Corps to have 24 amphibs "operationally available" on any given day.
The full-throated support by Armed Services Committee lawmakers could foreshadow Force Design 2030's future when its biggest proponent leaves the Marine Corps.
The commission was supposed to be up and running by March, but that deadline came and went. Only three of eight members have been announced.
“[It could become] a real waste of time and resource if every nominee for any political position is held up, but made all the more nonsensical in that uniformed service members do not set policy,” said CNAS senior fellow Katherine Kuzminski.
